Philippine President Duterte Gay but “Cured Himself”

Philippine President Duterte stated that he “cured himself” from being gay. During an economic forum and meeting with Japan-based Filipinos, Duterte made his “confession” that immediately sparked outraged. To make situations a bit more interesting, he referred himself similar to Philippine Senator Antonio Trillanes for being gay.

President Duterte – Gay???

The Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is known for his foul mouth during speeches, threats to perceived enemies and his war on drug all over the country. He is also known for making inappropriate jokes on raping women and calling it as a joke. After the meeting with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, he is also now known for his statement of being gay…but cured. He is also known for insulting people including Philip Goldberg, the US ambassador to Manila.

Last year, he also claimed 40 percent of rebels in the New People’s Army was gay and that his son had been molested by them. Bahaghari, a gay and transgender advocacy group, said Duterte’s comments were dangerous and retrograde.

During his campaign for president during the 2016 Elections, Duterte actually wanted to implement same-sex marriage, but later backtracked. The Philippines is highly lead by the Catholic Church. Abortion, divorce and same-sex marriage are illegal.

Being Gay…a Disease

The World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association no longer considers being gay as a disease or disorder but as a sexual orientation. Factors such as environment, desires, and community standards may lead to someone being gay. The Philippines has a reputation for openness toward homosexuality, but watchdogs warn legal protections are lacking.

These statements, like his perverted and offensive comments on women, cannot be taken lightly or dismissed merely as jokes.”
