The Department of Education of DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said in a virtual press briefing that the School Year (SY) 2020-2021 will be moved this coming August 24, 2020 until April 30, 2021. Opening of classes will be made this year from June to August, while the Philippines is still battling the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus.

DepEd said last Tuesday May 5, 2020 that the School Year 2020-2021 will continue though physical or virtual classes depending on the state of the country during this pandemic starting August 24, 2020. On April 24 however, President Rodrigo Duterte approved the recommendation of the IATF to move the opening of classes for school year 2020-2021 to September, but DepEd maintained that it was eyeing August for class opening.
DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said in virtual press briefing aired on state-run PTV4 that she had reported this to the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases, and that she had informed them that the chosen date was based on consultations.
“Naireport ko na sa IATF last week at nasabi ko na ang naipili naming date. Dahil sa pagconsultation namin, ang preference nila ay August…. Ang napili naming class opening date ay August 24,” she said.
(I already reported this to the IATF (Inter Agency Task Force) last week and I told them that, based on the consultations we did, their preference is August…. The class opening date that we chose is August 24.)
According to the IATF, they will have to decide whether classes can be conducted physically or virtually in an area, depending on how far the outbreak is by then. DepEd on the other hand are eyeing on information communication technology (ICT) platforms, television, and radio in delivering lessons during the pandemic.
School Enrollment Starts in June 1, 2020
On May 6, 2020, the Secretary of Education clarified that August 24, 2020 is the opening of classes in both public and private school. However, private schools that wants to open on June can do so if their respective government task force allows. Teachers and other school personnel are expected to report to work this June 1, 2020 when the start of enrollment is.
