NORECO II Power Interruption

Saturday January 31, 2015 will be a Power Interruption in the entire area of Santa Catalina, Bayawan and Basay from 8:00am – 5:00pm. Like most of the time the replacement of rotten woodpoles is the reason for this whole-day brownout.

On Sunday, February 1, 2015 many of us will be able to sleep without having to listen to the noisy Stereo of the neighbor. NORECO II is blessing us with a power interruption from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Affected areas will be the entire area of San Jose, Sibulan, Dumaguete, Valencia, Dauin, Bacong and Siaton.

A Word of Advice

The Dumaguete Field office is quite small and very busy throughout the year. You can speed up the process by being prepared. Have all your papers ready, bring the required printouts, copies and/or pictures. Please don’t waste the time of the staff and all others waiting to report just because “you didn’t know that…“).

Don’t rely on “fixer” or other expats who heard from a friend to do it different. Plenty of expats created a huge chaos in 2014 with trying to implement their own rules how to proceed, spreading false rumors and talking nonsense all over the internet, in McDonalds and all other expat meeting points

The website of the Bureau of Immigration is very informative and all required info can be found there.

Keep in mind that it is only one or two days out of 365 and a few Peso, which enables you to stay legally as a guest in the Philippines. Think about that and proceed with a smile

Sibulan yag-yag festival street dancing scene

Yagyag Festival in Sibulan

The Yagyag Festival in Sibulan is based on the spawning ritual performed by the thousands of land crabs such as the “Cagang” (cardisoma carnifes) and “Alalasan” (episesarman singaparense) along the shores and riverbanks of Barangay Cangmating during the last quarter of the year.

The phenomenon alerts the barrio folks to prepare their covered bamboo baskets (Bakat), torches made of dried coconuts leaves (sulo), and banboo crab traps (pasgong) to move out to the spawning grounds to gather the crabs.

This offers a livelihood income for the barrio folks as they can exchange or barter it with farm crops from neighboring barangays, aside from it its providing delicious scrumptious meals in their respective homes.

The Roots of YagYag Festival

Sibulan yag yag festival in Dumaguiete

From that lasting tradition the Yagyag Festival was born, to preserve and honor the custom of harvesting crabs during the Yagyag or spawning season. The Barangay government initiated holding the Yagyag Festival, six purok composing Barangay Cangmating enter into a friendly competition with each other by depicting or imitating the movements of the crabs during the courting, mating and spawning process.

The movements dramatize the traits inherent in the Filipino’s unity, solidarity, heroism, and self sacrifice to preserve the community and the nation.

To commemorate this generous natural resource, the Barangay folks stage the Yagyag Festival where imitate the movements of the land crabs in lively rhythms. The festival culminates in a celebration of the cycle of life those windows Cangmating with nutrition and livelihood.

The competition is widely awaited by residents of neighboring barangays, municipalities and cities because of the very colorful and unique presentations, the skills and the ability of the dancers, their creativity in portraying the crabs as well as the camaraderie displayed by all residents before and during the festival.

A salient feature of the festival is the imitation and mimicking of the land crabs characteristics by demonstrating through dance their unity and  solidarity by keeping close ranks and moving along a common agenda that propagating their kind and of protecting their young. Through this tapestry and choreography, the crabs have renewed their existence in this unending cycle of life.

ABOUT Negros Oriental 100

These past few years, road runs and marathons are conducted with such regularity in almost any big city in the Philippines. Race organizers usually do this to promote a healthy lifestyle among the people, and to help boost sports-tourism activities in their respective places.
But one can only run in any particular place so many times; otherwise, it could get pretty boring. More and more runners are now curious about other running adventures in other places in the country; this is precisely what we want to offer you here in Negros Oriental, in the central part of the Philippines.

The Negros Oriental Ultra-marathon 100-km offers you — and being designed to those who have yet to conquer their FIRST 100k Ultra-marathon — the opportunity to run along the asphalted highway of Negros Oriental starting at 5pm through the sunset, and meeting the sunrise the next day until about 5pm, giving you a breathtaking view between the Mindanao Sea and the Cuernos de Negros mountain range.

Negros Oriental 100 is one of the highlights in the celebration of the Charter Day of the City of Bayawan which culminates on Dec. 23.

With the prodding and support of the Negros Oriental-based Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club (MDRC) and the Dumaguete Adventure Runners & Striders (DARS), this Negros Oriental is organized by the Negros Oriental Sports Development Program (NOSDEP) of the Office of the Governor of Negros Oriental, and the Fiesta Committee of Bayawan City.

While all efforts are in place with aid stations spaced every 10-km distance to ensure the safety and well-being of the ultra-marathoners and the organizers, the Provincial government of Negros Oriental, the City government of Bayawan, the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Army, and the co-host local government units of Dumaguete City, the municipalities of Bacong, Dauin, Zamboanguita, Siaton, and Sta. Catalina, and the race sponsors shall be free from any liabilities or claims for damages arising injuries or mishaps for the duration of the ONe100 ultra-running.Negros Oriental 100-519x400

SCENIC RACE ROUTE

The Negros Oriental 100 race route is not only fun; it also has a number of photo-ops. It begins at the Provincial Capitol in the University Town of Dumaguete City, running along Rizal Boulevard (where Jose Rizal walked along the promenade, met some locals, and gave Dumaguete the monicker “City of Gentle People”), then Colon St. (the City’s oldest) where you could see the 18th century Bell Tower. Then the route takes you south to Km. 7 to the town of Bacong, birthplace of Philippine hero Pantaleon Villegas, more known by his nom de guerre Gen. Leon Kilat.

On to hilly roads of the town of Dauin in Km. 16. By Km. 25 is the jump-off point to Apo Island, one of the world’s Top 5 Dive Spots. Then you move on to the town of Zamboanguita by Km. 28, where the Japanese Imperial Forces Command surrendered to the Filipinos during World War II. Then up through the winding and hilly slopes of the enchanted town of Siaton by Km. 32, the original site chosen by the United States for their air base in the Philippines. You don’t stop until you reach the town of Sta. Catalina in Km. 90, Negros Oriental’s rice granary. And on to the FINISH LINE in the Sundown City of Bayawan.
