Dumaguete City Achieves Economic Milestone in 2024

Dumaguete City Achieves Economic Milestone in 2024

Dumaguete City  marked an significant economic milestone in 2024, achieving an annual income exceeding PHP 1 billion. This milestone elevated its status to a 2nd-class city, reflecting the dynamic growth of its local economy.

Mayor Felipe Antonio B. Remollo attributed this success to a steady influx of investments that boosted revenue streams, enabling the city to expand public services and deliver greater benefits to its residents.

Infrastructure Developments

During his year-end briefing, Mayor Remollo highlighted key infrastructure projects initiated by the local government without external financial assistance. These included the construction of concrete bridges, river control systems, and shoreline protection measures. Five newly built bridges aim to alleviate downtown traffic congestion while enhancing safety along the Banica River during adverse weather conditions.

Additionally, PHP 63.2 million was allocated to enhance public education infrastructure, addressing urgent needs across eight public schools. This budget also supported the completion of the Technical Vocational School in Barangay Batinguel, aiming to improve local educational opportunities.

Cultural and Public Health Enhancements

In September 2024, the city unveiled a notable cultural landmark: an eight-foot bronze statue of Dr. Jose Rizal at the Pantawan People’s Park on Rizal Boulevard. This tribute underscores Dumaguete’s commitment to celebrating its heritage.

Healthcare also received a boost with the opening of the City Satellite Hospital and the New City Health Office. Additionally, the Mega Evacuation Center in Barangay Talay now offers a safe haven for up to 1,000 individuals during emergencies, complete with comprehensive amenities.

Support for Communities

The city administration extended various forms of assistance to nearly 10,000 residents, including financial aid, mortuary benefits for senior citizens, and medical support. Hundreds of college students benefited from scholarships amounting to PHP 12,000 per school year, while disaster-affected individuals and distressed overseas Filipino workers also received cash assistance.

Dumaguete’s international ties were evident in its partnership with Yeongdong, South Korea, where 177 trainees gained hands-on agricultural experience while earning income.

Governance and Economic Efficiency

Mayor Remollo introduced the eBusiness Permit and Licensing System (eBPLS) to enhance efficiency, minimize bureaucracy, and encourage investments. The Bureau of Local Government Finance Region 7 recognized Dumaguete for surpassing revenue targets in 2023, showcasing exceptional performance in fees, business taxes, and economic enterprise receipts.

National and Regional Recognition

The city garnered multiple accolades for its achievements. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) lauded its Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) as the first in the Philippines to generate PHP 500,000 monthly for the local government. The MRF also provided sustainable livelihoods for waste pickers.

The Dumaguete City Health Office received recognition at the 2024 Local Health Systems Awards, earning nominations for outstanding local health initiatives and achieving a “Zero Open Defecation” certification.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) honored Dumaguete as the “Most Improved Component City in the Philippines” and the “2nd Most Efficient Government.” In addition, the city topped rankings for government efficiency and infrastructure development in Negros Oriental according to the 2024 Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index.

A Promising Future

Dumaguete City’s progress reflects its dedication to fostering economic growth, cultural heritage, and public welfare. With its innovative governance and infrastructure advancements, the city sets a benchmark for sustainable urban development in the region.
