Former Negros Oriental Governor Pryde Henry Teves Arrested
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) apprehended former Negros Oriental Governor Pryde Henry Teves on Thursday, June 20, 2024, in connection with alleged involvement in terrorist activities. According to a police report, Teves, the brother of expelled Negros Oriental representative Arnolfo Teves Jr., was detained in Dumaguete City around 8:15 a.m. for violating the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act of 2012.
An arrest warrant for Teves was issued by the Seventh Judicial Region, Branch 74 of Cebu City on May 13, 2024. Bail was set at 200,000 Philippine pesos. The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that Teves was listed among the top Most Wanted Persons (MWP) at both the provincial and regional levels.
In August 2023, the Anti-Terrorism Council (ATC) designated the Teves brothers and 12 others as terrorists due to their alleged involvement in multiple murders and harassment incidents in Negros Oriental over recent years. The ATC accused them of committing terrorism, planning, training, preparing, and facilitating terrorism, recruiting for and being members of a terrorist organization, and providing material support to terrorists. One notable incident was the murder of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo in March 2023, which also resulted in the deaths of several other innocent civilians.
An arrest warrant for Arnolfo, currently under house arrest amid an extradition trial in Timor Leste related to the incident, was issued in September.
Pryde Henry Teves posts P600,000 Bail
Pryde Henry Teves was released from police custody on Thursday afternoon after posting bail totaling P600,000. The release order came after Teves posted bail in court for three counts of violating Republic Act 10168. Dumaguete City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Gerardo Paguia Jr. issued and signed the release order at 3 p.m. on June 20.
Major Nazarino Emia, chief of the CIDG in Negros Oriental, stated that they had secured an arrest warrant against Teves from Cebu City RTC Branch 74 Judge Marlon Jay Moneva on Wednesday, June 19. However, they initially could not locate the former governor. Emia noted their surprise when Teves voluntarily appeared at the CIDG headquarters in Negros Oriental on Thursday morning to surrender. “We served the arrest warrant, and he managed to post bail immediately in court, which is why we released him,” Emia said.
