Governor Degamo is Back – Claim to be Eligible until 2034
by Eugenio Villaflores
Roel Ragay Degamo is back as Negros Oriental’s governor after Henry Pryde Teves stepped down last October 11, 2022. Since then, the new Governor Degamo has been busy attending meetings with the different government heads/units of the province. During one of the meetings, Degamo also claimed that he is eligible to run as governor until the year 2034.
Teves V.S. Degamo – Quick Recap
Last October 13, 2021, Roel Ragay Degamo petitioned to the Comelec Office to declare Ruel Degamo (real name Grego Gaudia) as a nuisance candidate. On December 16, 2021, the Comelec 2nd Division granted the then-governor’s petition. However, during the May election, the ballots still had the name of the nuisance candidate. At the end of the poll, Teves won the election with 301,319 and Roel Degamo finishing second with 281,773. On June 30, 2022 Teves sat at the capitol as the official governor of the province.
It was announced during the last week of September that Degamo would become the governor after the Commission on Election (Comelec) Office annul Teves’ win during the 2022 Election. However, it was only a few days ago that Teves finally stepped down from being the governor. This was after the Supreme Court denied his temporary restraining order against his rival; Degamo.
Degamo Eligible to Rule as Governor until 2034
Degamo claimed his supposed term for 2022-2025 was involuntarily interrupted when Teves took office, thus giving him an exemption from the constitutional 3-term limit based on the Tallado Doctrine. The Tallado Doctrine set a precedent in 2019 after the Supreme Court allowed former Camarines Norte Gov. Edgardo Tallado to run for a fourth consecutive term after his suspension from office involuntarily interrupted his first three terms.
Kutob ra tag 2025…(tungod)kay interrupted man ta…so plus three, plus three terms. So adto natas 2034″.
Supposed to end on 2025… (due) to the interruption…so plus three, plus three terms. So that’s 2034.
