Aftermath of Typhoon Odette in the Philippines
Super Typhoon Odette, internationally known as Typhoon Rai hit the southern and central part of the Philippines on December 16, 2021. Its strong winds with more than 200 Km/h and continuing heavy rainfall left a wide path of devastation all over the southern parts of the country. Visayas and Mindanao are suffering the most damages after the typhoon.
The Wrath of Typhoon Odette
Towns are flooded, roofs and houses and bridges collapsed, rivers leaving their beds, and thousands of fallen trees blocking access to towns and villages. Electricity, water, internet, and signal was all gone in most parts of Central Visayas during the storm. People could not contact their loved ones and didn’t have enough clean water to drink. Central Visayas, with Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, and Negros Oriental, are some of the areas that are affected badly.
Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office has recorded 41 dead, 57 injured, and 33 missing across the province as of 8 am on Sunday, December 19, according to figures cited by local media. The overall death toll reached 200, with hundreds of people still missing.
The national government has committed 2 billion pesos to help Visayas and Mindanao residents affected by Typhoon Odette. President Rodrigo Duterte has instructed government agencies to “use all government assets they can” to provide help for people affected by the typhoon.
Meanwhile, people are helping each other out in times of distress. Some are offering charging stations using their generators so people can charge gadgets. Ohers are helping hand in hand to clear the roads so ambulance and other emergency vehicles can pass.
