DTI Business Registration Requirements

Department of Trade and Industry

DTI Business Registration Requirements

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is in charge of the main economic catalyst that enables innovative, competitive, job-generating, inclusive business, and empowers consumers in the Philippines. They are also the government office that will issue your Business Name.

What is a Business Name?

Having a Business Name is important. It refers to ANY name that is different from the true name of the individual which is used or singed in connection with his/her business on any written or printed receipts. Including receipts for business taxes, duties and fees and withdrawal or delivery receipts; any written or printed evidence of any agreement or business transaction; and any sign or billboard conspicuously exhibited in plain view in, or at the place of her/his business or elsewhere, announcing his /her business.

In short, it gives you the right to own a business name for a period of 5 years. Depending on the territorial scope, no other business can use your business name. However, this is different to trade name. A trading name is also called a brand name, which is often used for advertising and marketing purposes. A business name is what you should use in all legal documents related to the business.

Requirements

All applicants (except for those filing their application online) must download, print, and fill out two copies of the Business Name Registration Form and present any of the following valid IDs:

  • Passport, Driver’s license, UMID, PRC ID, NBI Clearance, Police Clearance (in ID form), Postal ID, Voter’s ID, OWWA ID, Seaman’s Book
  • IBP ID, Senior citizen ID, PWD ID, Government office ID or Validated state college/university ID

Addition Documents (Depending on the Applicant):

  • For foreign nationals: Alien Certificate of Registration and Certificate of Registration for Sole Proprietorship/Certificate of Authority to Engage in Business in the Philippines issued by the concerned DTI office
  • For refugees/stateless people: Certificate of Recognition issued by the DOJ-RSPPU or Certificate of Recognition

Foreigners, refugees, and stateless people who apply for DTI business registration online still need to submit the documents listed above at any DTI office.

How to Register your Business Name with DTI?

DTI Online Registration

One of the options in registering for a DTI Business Name is through online. Simply file your application through the Business Name Registration System (BNRS). No need to visit a DTI office to get a Certificate of Business Name Registration.

Step 1: Go to BNRS site (bnrs.dti.gov.ph/registration)and access the New Registration page. Read the Terms and Conditions and click the I Agree button at the bottom of the page.
Step 2: Fill out the online registration form. Fields marked with a red asterisk must not be left blank. Your tax identification number (TIN) must also be provided on the online form.
Step 3: Pay the business name registration fee within seven days from the online application date.
Step 4: After successfully paying the transaction you’ll receive the Certificate of Business Name Registration via email.
Step 5: Once your payment is confirmed, click on “Register New Business” to complete the online DTI registration of your business name.

Paying Online for Business Name

Step 1: Go to the “Transaction Inquiry” module (bnrs.dti.gov.ph/inquiry) under the Business Name Services.
Step 2: Confirm and agree to the terms and conditions by clicking the button “I Agree.”
Step 3: Input the Reference Code of your transaction.
Step 4: Choose the Search button to look for your business name. Click on your business name, which appears in a blue hyperlink.
Step 5: You’ll be redirected to the Transaction Summary page. At the bottom of the page, click on “Resume” to edit or complete your payment transaction.
Step 6: You will then be redirected to the “Payment Details” page where you can choose from any of the available payment options (GCash, PayMaya, Smart Padala).

Once the payment is made, you’ll receive a Certificate of Business Name Registration (CBNR) and an Official Receipt (OR) in the email you provided during the registration. The CBNR and the OR will be received once the DTI payment has been successfully completed.

Step 1: Visit your nearest DTI office or Negosyo Center.
Step 2: Submit all the DTI business registration requirements. Make sure to have a list of backups in case your three proposed business names are already taken.
Step 3: Pay the business name registration fee.
Step 4: Once DTI approves your business name, it will issue a Certificate of Business Name Registration to you.
