Mt Kanlaon Ash Eruption
On December 27, 2015 at around 1:29pm an ash eruption occurred from the active crater of the Kanlaon Volcano. According to records, the eruption lasted about 5 minutes. The ash eruption of Mt Kanlaon could be heard in the surrounding Barangays and Cities in Negros Oriental and Occidental.
It was observed from the southeastern side that the plume reached a height of about 1000m above the crater. However, due to the clouds an exact number could not be named. According to pilot reports, the plum might have been as high as 4500m above the summit of the active volcano.
Slight ashfall is reported in several surrounding Barangays as far as the Municipality of Ponteyedra in Negros Occidental
Alert Level 1 at Kanlaon Volcano remains
The alert level on remains in effect over the Kanlaon Volcano. This means the volcano is in a period of current unrest and in abnormal conditions.
The LGUs reminded the population that an entry into the 4 kilometer permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited.
There is a possibility of sudden and hazardous phreatic or steam/driven eruption.
Civil aviation authorities also advised the pilots to avoid flying close to the summit of the volcano. Sudden eruptions can be hazardous to the aircraft.
The volcano is under close observation of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)
