San Jose – Negros Oriental

The municipality of San Jose is located in the eastern part of Negros Oriental in the Philippines, facing Cebu to the east across the Tañon Strait. The island of Negros is divided into the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros, separated by a range of craggy mountains. San Jose is a fifth class municipality in the Central Visayas region. The nearest big city is Dumaguete City, a 30-minute drive to the south. Situated just 6 meters above sea level, the town is administratively divided into fourteen barrios or barangays, which mean ward or district in the local language.

Getting to San Jose

Transportation going to San Jose are available in many ways here in Dumaguete City. One of the easy and local ways to get there is by riding an easy ride. Terminal for San Jose easy rides are located in front of Hotel Palwa and ChinaBank along the Negros South Road and the other is fronting McDonald’s in Quezon Park. The ride takes about 30 minutes and will cost only about Php 20.00.

Another way in getting there is by a bus passing San Jose traveling to the north. Fare prices are about Php 30.00 (air-conditioned bus) and about Php 15.00 (regular non-air conditioned bus). It will take about half an hour to reach the said destination.

Finally, one last practical option in getting to San Jose is by riding a v-hire (van for hire). Traveling time will take about half an hour as well but will only cost about Php 20.00.

Festivals in San Jose

The mainly Roman Catholic population of Negros Oriental holds Fiestas celebrating births, harvests, and other occasions, with each district having its own patron saint. San Jose celebrates the Fiesta of Saint Joseph in May every year. One of the highlights of the festival season is the “Ayuquitan Festival” is celebrated on 9th day of May, which has the legend of the naming of the town as its theme. The town also participates in the Buglasan festival, revived in 2001 and held in four of the major cities in October. All the municipalities attend this important festival and put up booths to offer their specialties to the public. Mardi Gras type of street dancing is a part of all festivities.

Places of Interest an Tourist Attractions in San Jose

The main attraction for tourists in the town of San Jose is the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in the cane fields of Cambaluctot. A spinning sun was said to have heralded the appearance of the Lady of Lourdes here. It is crowded with devotees every Saturday.

The Church of Saint Joseph the Worker is quaint and picturesque. The Twin Lakes Natural Park in Enrique Villanueva, Sibulan Town is a short drive away. Lake Balinsasayaw is a popular tourist destination. The Azalea restaurant created by famous Filipino architect Rene Armogenia on the road to Lake Balinsasayaw needs a special mention as the new tourist attraction because of the wonderful views of Cebu Island and the hills and valleys of San Jose that it offers. Visitors to the open air cafe breathe in the fresh mountain air and the late evenings can be spectacular when the surroundings are full of fireflies.
